EDUCATION - BUSINESS LINK

Mission: Through the active involvement of private sector representatives and educators, create an internationally competitive education system that yields an employable base rich in knowledge, culture and ethnic diversity.

Strategy #1: Recruit permanent Business-Education Action Team.

Objectives:

  1. Create an industry advisory group that will strengthen existing partnerships and establish a formal, on-going link between education and specific industries.
  2. Coordinate, review and encourage active methods to link education and business interests as they relate to future workforce.
Action Plan #1:

Date of Completion: June 1996

6.1.1 Action Date: January 1996 to June 1996
Action: Recruit Action Team members building on existing membership, with particular emphasis on adding business leaders:

a)Employer Criteria
   From cluster industries
   Both large and small businesses
   Business training department representatives

b)Education Criteria
   High school districts, County Office of Education
   Community Colleges
   Local 4 year colleges & universities
   Job training providers

Strategy #2: Develop and promulgate a statement on minimum standards for all high school graduates that is endorsed by business and education.

Objectives:

  1. Impact curriculums from analysis of the skills needed in cluster industries.
  2. Define required knowledge and skill levels of workforce needs by industry.
  3. Provide verification of student acquisition of required skills.

 

Action Plan #2:

Date of Completion: December 1996

6.2.1 Action Date: April 1996 to December 1996
Action: Create business/education subcommittee to:

a) Review various measurement tools, standards and resources currently used by educators as well as human resources departments by June 1996
b) Define base standards required by the business sector for future labor pools supportive of global competitiveness by July 1996
c) Draft initial standards and prepare business survey to solicit ratification/endorsements by August 1996
d) Distribute proposed standards statement through a questionnaire to businesses, and include a Programs and Innovation Directory by September 1996
e) Compile and analyze results
f) Prepare position paper with specific recommendations for implementation by December 1996

Strategy #3: improve and expand communications between education and business.

Objectives:

  1. Facilitate an internationally competitive education system by improving its linkage with regional and international business interests.
  2. Create industry advisory groups that will strengthen existing partnerships and establish a formal, ongoing link between education and specific industries, especially those with high growth.
  3. Complete an in-depth analysis of workforce needs and skills by industry.
  4. Project changes in industry needs/demands on which to base appropriate education and training programs.

 

Action Plan #3:

Date of Completion: March 1997

6.3.1 Action Date: May 1996 to March 1997
Action: Create a subcommittee to:

a)Prepare Scope of Work for Study by July 1996
   Identify criteria for analysis
   Determine resources required
   Identify asset base for resources needs
   Identify reporting/measurement methods
b)Conduct Study through identified sources (consultant or
   otherwise) by February 1997
c)Analyze Study results and identify parameters for
   modifications by March 1997
d)Prepare Report with recommendations, action plans,
   comparisons with innovative effort already underway,
   curriculum modifications, specific responsibilities of
   education and business sectors, and next steps by March
   1997
