- 4,249 cases of AIDS in infants and children under the age of 13 have been reported as of
December 31, 1992. It is conservatively estimated that as many as 10,000 20,000
children in the US may be infected with HIV
- The percentage of women, children and adolescents currently infected with HIV/AIDS may
be as high as 20% of all HIV cases in the US; together this is the fastest growing segment
in the population to have HIV.
- Over 6,000 HIV infected women give birth each year in the United States. Approximately
20-30% of these children are HIV infected. This accounts for over 1,800 new HIV infected
infants each year.
- Over 50% of children with AIDS have died already. AIDS is the ninth leading cause of
death among children aged one to four.
- By the year 2000, AIDS will be one of the five leading causes of death among American
children and among children worldwide.
- Nearly 100% of new cases of HIV infection in children result from the virus being passed
from an infected mother to her newborn.
- AIDS is now ranked as the fifth leading cause of death among women ages 25 to 44.
- As of 1991, the number of teen AIDS cases is doubling within the US every 14 months.
From 1990 to 1991, the number of teen and you adults (aged 13 to 24) who were diagnosed
with AIDS increased by 77%.
