- There is a significantly high proportion of people with disabilities in the Bay Area
than in the Nation as a whole. Two of the reasons for this high concentration are: 1)
those with disabilities are more comfortable in a mild climate; and 2) people tend to move
to areas where service are available to them, and in the Bay Area there is a strong system
of social services geared toward those with disabilities.
- Many people with disabilities who would like to live at home cannot afford the proper
in-home care and are forced into homes.
- Persons with disabilities face a multitude of barriers in everyday life; a lack of
easily accessible transportation; a lack of affordable and appropriate housing;
discrimination (especially in regards to employment); and an abundance of buildings not
designed properly to meet the needs of disabled persons.
- There is a growing population of persons with disabilities, including persons who are
HIV-positive, children with birth defects, individuals with environmental illnesses,
children born addicted to crack cocaine, and individuals surviving traumatic injuries, all
of whom need long term health support.
