Non-related households account for 32.9% of the total households in San Mateo County. Of all non-related households in San Mateo, 37.9% are in the Central subarea. The North subarea has the highest percentage of female-headed families. Of the 56,605 families in the North subarea, 16.6% are female-headed. This subarea also contains 39.6% of the county's female-headed families.

 

B. Persons, Households and Families in Poverty

Of the total 639,086 persons for whom poverty status was determined in San Mateo, 40,405 or 6.3% were living below poverty level. Of the total persons living below the poverty level (40,405), cities and places having the largest number of persons living below the poverty level included Daly City with 6,560 (16.2%); Redwood City, 5,328 (13.2%); San Mateo, 5,186 (12.8%); East Palo Alto 4,072 (10.1 %); North Fair Oaks, 2,333 (5.8%); and Menlo Park, 1,745 (4.3%).

East Palo Alto and North Fair Oaks have the largest percent of their total population living below the poverty level with 17.9% and 17.1 % respectively. Remaining cities and places percent of total population living below the poverty level range from 0.4% (Highlands in Central County) to 8.7% (Brisbane in North County).

Of the total 242,348 households for whom poverty was determined, 5.6% were living below the poverty level (see Text Table 10).
