- Of the total women 16 years and over in the labor force,
53,133 or 31.5% have children under 18.
- According to the 1990 US Census in California, the mean
family income of households were a married couple and children under 18 was $55,347
($59,265 with no children present). A male head-of-household with children and no spouse
present had a mean income of $30,787 as contrasted with the female-head-of
-household with children and no spouse of $20,561. This disparity is attributed to a
number of issues that impact women such as low earning potential, vulnerability to layoffs
and other work interruptions, less education and work experience, and occupational
segregation. Discrimination in wages, job promotion and access to high paying jobs also
kept a lid on women's wages.
- Minority girls from low income families are at risk for
abuse, violence, educational deprivation, pregnancy and neglect.
