POPULATION

What Was Measured?
Data shows the total population of San Mateo County on July I in each of the last 11 years.  Additionally, county population trends are estimated to 2040.

Why Is It Important?
Population statistics represent individuals who reside in San Mateo County.  Each seeks a quality life here where he or she can work, learn, play, create and grow.  Each individual seeks to meet basic human needs for physical well-being; shelter, safety and security; family and friends; and opportunities to fulfill one's potential.

The ability of the political, economic, and social institutions in the county to provide a cultural environment that supports individual needs and goals, while maintaining a healthy physical environment is challenged as the population grows.  Anticipating our future needs is an essential for planning effectively for the quality environments we seek to achieve.

What Was Found?
There was a growth of over 12 percent during the past I I years with a slight leveling off in the past 3 years, possibly due to local economic conditions.  Natural increase (births minus deaths) has remained between 4,500 and 5,501 per year.  Net migration is a more unpredictable factor causing differences in yearly growth rates.

What Is The Trend?
County population rate of growth is projected to decrease, remaining well below projected state population growth rate.
