About the PLS LibX Firefox Browser extension

LibX is a Mozilla Firefox web browser extension that provides direct access to the Peninsula Library System’s online catalog. It works similar to a Google or Yahoo toolbar. LibX allows for quick searches within the Library’s catalog from any webpage using a Mozilla Firefox web browser. top

 

How to download the PLS LibX Firefox Browser extension

Open this page (http://www.plsinfo.org/libx/index.html) using the Firefox web browser. Click on the link for the LibX download. Firefox should immediately recognize this extension file and open a download window.

(Note: If Firefox prevents automatic installation, you may have to take one of the folowing steps:

  • Allow Firefox to download from the Peninsula Library System’s website. or
  • Download the *.xpi file by right-clicking the link (http://www.plsinfo.org/libx/), and choose Save link as...  Then open the file in Firefox (Choose File/Open File... or Ctrl+O), and the extention will install.

Once LibX has been installed, you will need to quit Firefox and re-start it. LibX will appear below the standard Firefox navigation toolbar. top

 

 

LibX features

Basic Search:

The LibX toolbar offers 4 basic search functions. You may select a Keyword, Title, Author or Subject search. Click on the keyword drop down button to view all choices.

Advanced Search:

The LibX toolbar also offers advanced search options. To select additional search criteria, click on the blue down arrow button on the right hand side of the search field to open additional search fields.

Drag and Drop or Right Click Context Menu:

LibX will also allow you to search any term on a webpage by selecting that item and dragging it up to the toolbar and dropping it into the search field.

Google Scholar Support:

LibX will allow you to select terms on any webpage and search for the selected terms on Google Scholar. You may do this by selecting the desired text, and dragging and dropping the terms on the Google Scholar button in the upper right hand corner of the toolbar.

Embedded Cues:

LibX places localized cues libxpls in web pages you visit if the Peninsula Library System has resources related to that page. Whenever you see the cue, click on the link to look at what the library has to offer. For instance, book pages at Amazon or Barnes & Noble contain cues that can check whether the Peninsula Library System has the book you are looking to buy. Other pages that contain cues are Google, Yahoo! Search, the NY Times Book review and others.

LibX Bookmarks 

In the drop down menu labeled LibX PLS on your right hand side, you will find bookmarks many useful websites.

  • PLS Home Page will take you to the Peninsula Library System’s web homepage.

  • PLS Catalog will take you to the Peninsula Library System’s online catalog.

  • OCLC Firstsearch will take you to the California Libraries catalog.

  • Search CIP will take you to the Peninsula Library System’s Community Information Program.

LibX Preferences and Settings:

If you would like LibX to automatically link ISBNs and ISSNs, make sure the Autolink Pages feature is enabled by clicking on it until the checkmark appears. When enabled, this feature will automatically turn ISBNs and ISSNs into links that can be clicked on from any webpage generating a search into the Peninsula Library Systems online catalog.

Click on the drop down button labeled LibX PLS on the left hand side of the tool bar. Under Display Preferences, you will be able to select how you want your search results to appear on your web browser.
