Daly City Public
Library
Internet User Guidelines
The Daly City Public Library provides
computers for public use. Not all computers provide access to the
same services. Computers may provide access to any of the following
resources:
- The library's public access catalog
- Research tools, including periodical
indices and phone directories
- The Internet
- Software such as word processing
and spreadsheet programs, children's learning software, and reference
tools such as encyclopedias
Procedures:
Express Stations (15-minute)
One or two computers at each library
may be designated as Express Stations for 15-minute Internet use.
The Express Stations are available on a drop-in basis. After 15
minutes, if no new customer is waiting to use the computer, the
current user may continue using the computer until a new Express
user arrives.
General Rules for All Computer
Use
- All computers are available on
a walk-in basis, first come-first served. No advanced
reservations will be taken.
- The standard time limit for non-Express
computers is 1 hour.
- Computer users may be asked to
present a current library card or other acceptable identification
to register for and use any computer workstation. Staff will hold
the user's identification at the reference desk while he/she is
using any computer.
- Designated library staff may help
customers get started on the computer if necessary and may be
able to provide assistance if time permits.
- Computer users will follow posted
sign-up and time limit guidelines. If others are waiting to use
a computer, customers must limit non-Express computer use to one
hour. The customer who has been at a computer the longest will
be given a 5-minute warning to complete his or her work and give
up the workstation to the next person waiting.
- Computer users may bring their
own floppy disks for downloading, or purchase a disk at the Circulation
Desk for 50¢.
- Computer users must follow posted
printing instructions. Printing requires that the "print"
button be pushed only once. Multiple commands can cause the printer's
memory to overload and stall.
- Printing costs 10¢ per page, payable
at the Library Circulation Desk.
- Computer users are requested to
report equipment and operation problems to the Library staff.
- Library staff is authorized to
make exceptions to these posted rules.
Prohibitions
- Computer equipment can only be
used for designated purposes. Equipment cannot be unplugged, removed
or otherwise modified. Computer users cannot attempt to reconfigure
systems or programs or in any way interfere with the Library's
system set-up.
- Computer users cannot install
personal software into library computers.
- Computer users cannot use the
library's computers for unlawful purposes.
- Computer users who disregard Library
procedures will be prohibited from using the equipment.
